Pellets Hormone Therapy
Although there are only a handful of hormones that we focus on for Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), there are many ways to apply these hormones. There are pills, patches, creams, gels, nasal sprays, sublinguals, suppositories, injections, and pellets. There is a place for many of these applications and it is very patient specific, however some applications provide an optimal response in the body more than others. One of the best physiological applications of BHRT is pellet implants.
How Hormone Pellets Work
The ovaries and testicles are NOT in the digestive system. This is the premise which guides my advice to patients on how to take their BHRT. What happens naturally is that the brain communicates with the ovaries, testicles and adrenal glands that the body needs hormones. These glands then make and secrete their product hormones which then circulate around the body doing their jobs. Once these steroid hormones have done their jobs, they are then circulated through the livers’ second level of filtration (methylation, glucuronidation, etc) and excreted out of the body by way of the kidneys. Using pellet hormone implants, the hormones are released gradually from the pellet source that has been placed under the skin. This offers total body and brain saturation of hormones that one cannot get from daily applications. The pellets last 2-6 months and on average 3-4 for most patients, which can give a tremendous level of satisfaction for those on BHRT for the long haul.
History of Hormone Pellets
Hormone therapy using pellets is not new. Pellet hormone replacement therapy has been available and researched for more than 70 years. Pellets were initially developed in France in the 1930’s for menopausal females. They were used in the United States from the late 1930s to the early 1970s. Time has proven to provide safer options as pellet hormone therapy utilizes bio-identical hormones rather than its predecessor products of synthetics used in the early days. In 1972, the FDA approved testosterone pellets for HRT. Pellet therapy is currently popular in Europe and Australia and the US for both men and women.
NatureMed’s Approach to Estrogen and Testosterone Pellets
We are patient-centered in our approach to pellet therapy. Unlike large pellet clinics out there who are trained and marketed by manufacturers of pellets, and who in turn stock and sell those pellets, we are independent.
We do not put patients on a revolving standard three month rotation like pellet-centered clinics. We follow patient symptoms and labs. We know the physiology of pellets and use this as our guide. We understand the typical blood level ranges to expect, acknowledge that every person is different, and adjust doses accordingly. We use reputable and high quality compounding pharmacies for our pellet patients. We have excellent insertion techniques and patients are very relieved by this after going to other clinics where they got ‘stabbed and scared’ and over medicated. We are not a pellet clinic, we are an integrative clinic focused on the patient rather than selling pellets. We do not stockpile pellets that need to be sold.
Hormone Pellet Therapy: What to Expect
- Patient specific dosing
- A visit with our MD and ND to ensure quality care
- Pellets come direct to the patient from the pharmacy to ensure you know what you are getting
- Regular monitoring with laboratory testing to ensure proper dosing
- Implantation technique that is comfortable and with minimal scarring
Our patient-centered approach to pellets is the reason why our patients have long-term success on Bioidentical hormone pellet implants.
