Area of Focus

From Adolescence to Perimenopause, Menopause and beyond, a woman’s body undergoes continuous, dynamic and miraculous changes, primarily driven by the influence of reproductive hormone fluctuations.  These hormonal oscillations – menstrual cycles – affect every aspect of a woman’s health and life, such as: fertility, metabolism and energy production, exercise and muscle endurance, thyroid and adrenal function, digestion, hair and skin integrity, cardiovascular health, sleep, brain function and moods, relationships and so much more.

When reproductive hormone production is balanced and the rest of the body systems are regulated, women’s bodies function like a symphony. Every organ and body system must be synchronized in resonant harmony. When adverse life circumstances, chronic stress, unhealthy, processed foods, sedentary and sabotaging lifestyle influences and other complications interfere with women’s bodies, health problems – especially hormonal irregularities – can often result.

These hormonal conditions might include painful menstrual cramping, heavier menstrual bleeding, intense PMS, endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, hormonal cystic acne, skipping periods or amenorrhea, uterine fibroids, hormone related mood swings, weight gain and water retention, low libido, fatigue and more.

Add in the hormone decline and transitional phase of perimenopause and menopause, and women’s bodies – physical health and mental/emotional well-being – can become even more sensitive and complicated.

The great news is that women’s bodies respond naturally and wonderfully to naturopathic and functional medicine recommendations. For the most effective, safest and personalized approach and treatment for your body, it is essential to consult with a licensed naturopathic and functional medicine doctor who is well-experienced in women’s health and understands the complexities, nuances, and uniqueness of women’s bodies.

Metabolic health is vitally important. It is a measure of the quality and efficiency of how well your body processes, generates and utilizes energy – your metabolism.

Metabolism refers to all biochemical processes that occur throughout your body where the food you eat is converted into energy (in the form of ATP) to sustain your life and improve your health. Metabolism also refers to the building and repairing of your cells, tissues and organs, as well as the metabolic influence on hormonal regulation.

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the energy your body needs – to keep you alive – to perform essential functions like breathing, regulating body temperature, circulating blood and maintaining vital organ function.

Essentially, metabolism ensures your body has a steady supply of nourishment to continue functioning while also managing how your body stores or burns energy.

Metabolic health is powerfully guided by many organs throughout your body, including the hypothalamus in your brain, gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, thyroid and adrenal glands, muscles, adipose (fat) tissue and others. Your metabolic health is also affected by certain factors such as age, gender, body size and composition, all hormone levels as well as genetics.

Your metabolic health is profoundly adaptable and influenced by the quality and consistency of your diet, exercise and many other lifestyle choices and practices. The level of your metabolic health can either lead to exceptional health, a better quality of life and longevity or can result in illness, chronic disease, lower quality of life and early mortality.

Common health conditions that can indicate a need for metabolic support, include:

  • Hypothyroidism, i.e., Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Insulin Resistance, Pre-Diabetes & Diabetes
  • Perimenopause & Menopause
  • Menstrual Cycle Irregularities, i.e., Endometriosis, PMS, PCOS
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Obesity or elevated Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Constipation & Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Chronic Inflammation
  • Depression
  • And many others
